Change Locks After a Break-In in Edmond
If someone forced a door or you no longer trust who has keys, the next step is restoring a working lock on that opening — calmly and on-site. A Better Locksmith is a fully mobile locksmith serving Edmond, Oklahoma City, and Guthrie (Oklahoma License #1065). Call (405) 348-8688 and we will rekey or change the affected locks at your home.
This page is specifically for post-incident lock work. For planned upgrades, moving in, or matching hardware on an undamaged door, use our general lock change service page. Both jobs use the same licensed technicians; the difference is focus: restore security after a compromise versus a routine hardware update.
What We Do After a Break-In
- On-site assessment — We look at the lock body, strike, and door edge to see whether the hardware can be trusted.
- Rekey when the lock is intact — Old keys stop working; you keep the existing hardware. See rekeying locks.
- Lock change when hardware is damaged — Remove a compromised cylinder or deadbolt and install a new lock on the same door.
- Check other exterior doors — Side, garage-entry, and back doors often share keys; we can align them so one set works after the incident.
- Optional keypad or smart upgrade — If you want codes instead of extra keys, we can discuss smart lock installation once the door is sound.
How This Differs From a Standard Lock Change
A standard lock change is often a moving-day or style upgrade: the door is fine, and you want new hardware. After a break-in, the door may be split, the bolt bent, or the cylinder ripped. We prioritize a door that latches and a lock you can trust tonight, then talk about upgrades once the opening is secure.
We will not upsell a full house of new locks if rekeying the undamaged cylinders restores control of the keys. We also will not rekey a lock that has been forced — that hardware needs to be changed.

After a Break-In — FAQs
When is rekeying enough, and when should locks be replaced?
Rekey if the lock still operates smoothly and only the keys are a concern. Change or replace the lock if it was pried, drilled, kicked, or the bolt will not throw. We decide that at the door — not from a phone photo alone if the damage is unclear.
What should I do before the locksmith arrives?
If it is safe, keep people and pets away from a damaged door. Do not force a bent lock further. Have ID ready so we know we are working for the occupant. We are not attorneys and cannot advise on police reports or insurance claims — only on getting a working lock back on the door.
Do you offer same-day mobile lock changes?
We are fully mobile and often complete the rekey or lock change during the visit we book. Call (405) 348-8688 to check availability. We do not advertise guaranteed arrival times.
