Interchangeable Core (IC) Systems & Conversion in Edmond & OKC
Offices, multi-tenant buildings, schools, and facilities that change who holds keys on a regular basis often outgrow standard fixed cylinders. With an interchangeable core (IC) system, an authorized control key removes the keyed core from the lock, and a differently keyed core goes in. The lock body and trim stay on the door. A Better Locksmith is a fully mobile commercial locksmith serving Edmond, Oklahoma City, and Guthrie since 1986. Call (405) 348-8688. We quote before work begins.
This page covers IC system setup and conversion. For rekeying conventional cylinders after a staff change, see commercial rekey. For the commercial hub, see commercial locksmith.
Who this page is for
- Office and facility managers who rekey often because staff, vendors, or tenants change
- Multi-tenant buildings where the landlord controls the corridor and suite cores
- Businesses already running a master key system that want cores they can swap out without pulling the lock
- Property and facilities teams taking over a building that already has IC hardware and no records of it
We work for the owner or manager who has authority over the doors. If building rules or landlord instructions apply, have them on hand.
What we install and service
- IC conversion: we change conventional commercial locks or cylinders over to IC-ready hardware where the door and lock allow it
- Core keying: we pin cores to your keying plan, including change keys, masters, and a separate control key
- Core swaps after turnover: we replace or re-pin the cores affected when a key is lost or someone leaves, and the rest of the system stays as it is
- Adding to existing IC systems: we add new doors or cores to a system you already have when the format and keyway are compatible
- Coordination with commercial locks, high-security locks, and commercial access control when an IC door also has electronic entry or a restricted keyway
Not every lock can be converted, and not every IC format fits every lock body. Tell us what's on the door when you call, and we'll tell you what we can do on-site.
When a dedicated IC page beats the rekey or master key pages
Commercial rekey covers repinning the cylinders you already have. Master key systems covers who opens which door. This page is about the hardware choice in between: whether the building should run on removable cores so later key changes happen at the core instead of the whole cylinder.
Use the rekey page when you only need old keys to stop working. Use this page when you're planning or already running interchangeable cores.
How IC fits with master keys and key control
An IC system is a way to hold a keying plan, not a replacement for one. The keying hierarchy still decides which key opens which door, from change keys to masters. The control key is an extra level that removes cores, so it should be issued to as few people as possible and documented like any other key in the system.
We often set up:
- IC cores on high-turnover doors such as suites, shared offices, and storage, alongside conventional cylinders where nothing changes
- A documented keying chart showing which core is in which door
- Commercial access control on the front or highest-traffic door, with IC cores behind it for mechanical backup
For one point of contact across several buildings or locations, see corporate accounts.
How a commercial IC call works
- Call (405) 348-8688. Say you're interested in interchangeable cores, and tell us the city, how many doors, and whether you already have a master key system or existing IC hardware.
- Confirm you're the owner or authorized manager for those doors. We confirm authorization before changing locks or cores.
- We quote before work begins.
- A technician comes to the site. A Better Locksmith is a service-area business with no storefront. Work is finished on-site when the doors and hardware allow it.
We confirm availability when you call. We do not publish arrival times.

Interchangeable Core FAQs
What is an interchangeable core?
It's a keyed core that an authorized control key can remove from the lock housing. A new core can go in without taking the lock off the door. Our glossary also covers the small format (SFIC) and large format (LFIC) terms.
Is IC the same as rekeying?
No. A commercial rekey changes the pins inside the cylinders you already have. An IC system lets a whole core come out and a differently keyed one go in. Many buildings use both approaches.
Can you convert our existing locks to interchangeable cores?
Often, depending on the lock body and the IC format. Call (405) 348-8688 with the door count and the hardware you have now, and we'll scope it.
Does IC work with our master key system?
Yes, when the system is planned for it. Cores are pinned to the keying chart, and the control key is documented as its own level. See master key systems.
Do you publish prices for IC conversion?
No. We quote before work for your building.
