1. Key type
Not every car key is a stamped piece of metal. The blank and the electronics change the job.
- Standard metal keys — Older vehicles. Cut only. No chip to program.
- Transponder keys — A chip in the head must match the immobilizer before the engine starts. Cutting the blade is only half the work. See transponder keys.
- Remote-head keys and fobs — Lock/unlock buttons plus (often) a transponder. Two functions to get right.
- Smart / proximity keys — Push-to-start. The fob talks to the car when it is nearby. Replacement is programming-heavy and make-specific.

2. Programming
Programming is the step that teaches the vehicle to accept the new key or fob. It is a separate cost driver from cutting the blade.

3. Lockout vs ignition work
A lockout and an ignition job are different services. Do not treat them as the same quote.
- Keys locked in the car — Non-destructive entry so you can use the keys you already have. Start on car lockout. A spare key after the unlock is optional, not automatic.
- Lost keys, no spare — Originate and program a new key at the vehicle when the platform allows it. That is key replacement, not a lockout.
- Broken key in the door or ignition — Extraction first, then decide whether the cylinder or ignition still works.
