Lock Decoding: Reading a Lock Without Guessing

Decoding is the process of determining the correct position of components in a lock.

Manipulation Decoding

In pin-tumbler locks, a tool may be used to determine bottom pin sizes once the lock has been picked.

Visual and Optical Methods

In wafer locks, a bore scope can be used to look at the position of each wafer as it rests in the lock.

Disassembly and Measurement

Removing a plug exposes pin lengths stamped on factory pins or measurable with calipers. SFIC cores decode quickly on pinning mats. This path is destructive to the "locked" state but fast for authorized rekey projects.

Forensic and Security Context

Decoding leaves varied evidence — scratch marks from gauges, disassembled hardware, or none at all for pure visual reads. Facilities protecting against insider threat combine restricted keyways with access logging, not just paracentric profiles.

Locksmith Training

Decoding is core curriculum alongside impressioning and master key charting. See also impressioning, key cutting, and wafer locks for related workflows.
